I was searching for a book set in Virginia for a challenge and came across Big Stone Gap by Adriana Trigiani, set in the late s. The main character, Ave Maria Mulligan is a 35 year old self-proclaimed spinster and the local pharmacist in Big Stone Gap, a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains/5.

Adrianna Trigiani is a fantastic author and Big Stone Gap #1 is a very humorous book about life in a small Virginia coal town. The characters were realistic and likable.

Big Stone Gap shows that life is sometimes unpredictable and how we deal with it is the true test of who we are/5().

Big Cherry Holler by Adriana Trigiani is the second book in the Big Stone Gap series. The first half of the book was tedious to read but the second half picked up the pace. I was looking forward to reading this one because I really enjoyed the story and the characters in the first book.

However, this one fell quite a big short for me/5. Ave Maria owns a pharmacy in Big Stone gap and knows many people in the whole town.

Early on in the book though, a high school girl comes into Ave's life that really needs someone to look up to. Her name is Pearl, and she an Ave instantly form a friendship that is long-lasting.
